The finire (the finishing) invokes much more than the articulation of details. Of foremost consideration is Unity.

Not only is the figure/ground relationship pulled into a harmonious whole the painter must also strive for the full stretch of light to dark, warm to cool while also seizing upon bravura codas -- those inspired strokes of color -- as they arise.

At the end of the painting process the resulting image must appear effortless and fresh to the viewer. As if the arduous task of painting were nothing to you.
